Highlights of the Covid-19 (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2020

The COVID-19 (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT 2020 (the “Act) was approved by the Mauritian Parliament on 15 May 2020 and came into force on 16 May 2020 after publication in the official gazette.

The aim of the legislation, which amended no less than 56 legislations, is to cater for the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, alleviate economic hardship and give a boost to the economy.

Under the Act, the ‘COVID-19 Period’ is defined as the period starting on 23 March 2020 and ending on 1 June 2020 or such later date as may be prescribed by the Prime Minister by regulations. Most of the changes made by the Act will be deemed effective as from 23 March 2020.
