Role summary

As Associate Director of the Middle Office and Settlements teams in South Africa, you will be responsible for managing and running of the Middle Office team and Settlements team against their service level delivery objectives. This includes management of daily workload across and within the teams as well as client expectations and delivery.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Ability to self-manage in a high volume, fast-paced environment with strict deadlines;
  • Management of and responsibility for the Middle Office and Settlements teams;
  • Assessment of Middle Office and Settlements teams for operational efficiencies;
  • Key coordinator for operational projects within the teams and areas;
  • Identify and communicate system needs and implementing changes through to completion;
  • Responsibility for Middle Office and Settlements team policies and procedures;
  • Maintain and grow key client relationships in the Middle Office and Settlements areas, through the delivery of excellent client services and products;
  • Engage in regular client feedback meetings to ensure ongoing development of service in line with client expectations;
  • Ensure process and policies are implemented in line with client and business requirements and expectations;
  • Take responsibility and ownership for the functional areas of Middle Office and Settlements, ensuring expected time frames for delivery within these teams are met;
  • Responsible for the entire post trade process, including transmission of trades to counterparties, matching/confirmation/affirmation of trades, and resolution of exceptions;
  • Provide guidance and technical support to both team members and the business;
  • Liaise with other department heads to ensure solutions are found to issues raised;
  • Troubleshoot and provide technical assistance in operational or performance issues;
  • Be aware of broader market events that could impact trading and settlement. Research and resolve complex problems relating to country specific trade and settlement issues;
  • Communicate daily with counterparties and third-party venders to expedite timely settlement of trades;
  • Maintain day-to-day relationships with a wide range of brokers, custodians and vendors;
  • Ensure that the company is protected against loss through best practices in the relevant operational areas;
  • Understanding and ensuring team members adherence to Group and Compliance policies and procedures;
  • Ensure that all tasks are carried out in line with company policies and within the framework of our industry;
  • Ensure the systems of internal controls, are adhered to, ensuring compliance and certification with regards to future ISAE3402;
  • Maximise use and employment of budget within the departments, to meet the business needs and demands around resourcing requirements;
  • Participate in technology development efforts as needed;
  • Perform daily and monthly audits as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills / experience required

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and a minimum of 5 years applicable experience;
  • Knowledge of most major custodial systems and processes is a distinct advantage;
  • Sound understanding and experience of international trade settlements;
  • Experience in using various trade matching applications is an advantage;
  • Working knowledge of the settlements process and the lifecycle of a trade is a must;
  • Knowledge of SWIFT messaging or other relevant systems preferred;
  • A high attention to detail and structured approach to work;
  • A good understanding of MS office & IT packages (particularly Excel);
  • Knowledge of international securities markets is essential;
  • Above average communication skills (written & verbal);
  • Confident & enthusiastic, and a quick learner;
  • Displays excellent organization, time management and planning skills;
  • A track record of successfully working within a team.
